Spicy and Sour Gravy


2 tbsp oil

1/2 tsp asafoetida

4-5 cloves garlic, crushed

A few curry leaves

1 ½ tsp red chilli powder

2 tsp black masala

4-5 cups red split gram water (from the puran)

2 tbsp jaggery

1 tbsp tamarind pulp

Salt to taste

1 cup yellow split gram cooked in 6-7 cups water and drained

1 tsp cumin seeds

To Garnish

Finely-chopped coriander

Grated coconut


1. Heat oil in a saucepan. Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, garlic and curry leaves. Add chilli powder and black masala and roast for two to three minutes.

2. Add gram water and boil it on low heat. Add jaggery, tamarind and salt. Boil till all the spices are mixed well.

3. Garnish with coconut and coriander and serve hot with puran poli or rice.

Makes 7-8 servings
