Fada Ni Khichdi

Cracked Wheat And Gram Mixture


1 cup cracked wheat

1/2 cup split green gram

1 cup mixed vegetables, finely-chopped

1 ½ cups tomato puree

1 inch piece ginger

Salt to taste

For Tempering

3 tbsp ghee

1 inch piece cinnamon

3-4 cloves

1/4 tsp turmeric powder

1/4 tsp asafoetida

1/2 tsp chilli powder

1 tsp garam masala

1 tbsp ginger-chilli paste

To Serve

Spiced yogurt, as required


1. Wash and soak cracked wheat and split gram separately for half an hour. Mix it with chopped vegetables, ginger and two cups of hot water. Pressure cook for three whistles. Set aside to cool.

2. After about twenty minutes open the cooker and churn the mixture with a wooden whisk to make it smooth. Add a little hot water if the mixture is too dry to get a semi- soft consistency.

3. Add tomato puree and salt to taste and mix well. Transfer this to a heavy saucepan and put it on slow flame to simmer.

4. Heat ghee in a small saucepan, add all the tempering ingredients and let them sizzle.

5. Add this to the wheat mixture and blend, beating vigorously.

6. Serve hot with spiced yogurt. (Le. yogurt with salt, sugar, cumin powder, chilli powder and chopped coriander).
