Gol Kokum Ni Kadhi

Sweet and Sour Yogurt Soup


1 ½ cups sour yogurt

4 tbsp gram flour

4 cups split gram water (dol ka pani)

3-4 tbsp jaggery

3-4 petals black kokum

2 tsp ginger-chilli paste

Salt to taste

2 tbsp ghee

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds

1/2 tsp cumin seeds

1/2 tsp asafoetida

3-4 dried round red chillies

A few curry leaves

2 (small) brinjals, cubed

2 inch piece white radish, sliced into long strips


1. Mix yogurt and flour with dol water and churn properly to avoid lumps. Add jaggery, kokum, ginger-chilli paste and salt.

2. Boil this mixture on medium heat, stirring occasionally. In another small pan, heat ghee and add mustard, fenugreek seeds and cumin seeds.

3. When they splutter, add asafoetida, red chillies and curry leaves.

4. Add brinjal and radish and cook until the vegetables are soft. Now add this tempering to the yogurt mixture and bring to a boil. Simmer it for fifteen to twenty minutes. Serve hot with rice and thick yellow split gram (Iachko dol).
