Kacha Papaya Nu Shaak

Raw Papaya Salad


1 tbsp oil

1 tsp mustard seeds

A pinch of asafoetida

A few curry leaves

3-4 green chillies, slit

1 inch piece ginger, finely-chopped

2 pieces fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped

250 gm raw papaya, peeled, halved and sliced

1 tbsp coriander leaves, chopped

Salt to taste

Sugar to taste

Lemon juice to taste


1. Heat oil in a small saucepan, add mustard seeds and when they splutter add asafoetida, curry leaves, chillies, ginger and turmeric.

2. Cook for three to four minutes, stirring occasionally. Add raw papaya and let it cook till semi-soft. Add seasonings and mix well.

3. Turn it out in a serving bowl, garnish with coriander and serve at room temperature.

Note: You can grate the papaya instead of slicing it.
