Khatti-Mitthi Dal
Sweet and Sour Split Gram
INGREDIENTS
For the Dal
1 cup red split gram, washed and soaked
10-12 peanuts
1 tsp ginger-chilli paste
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
3-4 pieces kokum
2-3 tbsp jaggery
Salt to taste
For Tempering
1 tbsp ghee
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
2 sticks cinnamon
3-4 cloves
1-2 green chillies
6-8 curry leaves
A pinch of asafoetida
METHOD
1. Pressure-cook the gram along with peanuts and four to five cups of water. When cool, churn well with the wooden beater. Add all the ingredients for the gram and boil for ten to fifteen minutes.
2. In a small tempering vessel heat ghee, add mustard, cumin and fenugreek seeds. Let them splutter, then add cloves, cinnamon, asafoetida and curry leaves.
3. Pour this over the boiling gram. Boil for five minutes and serve hot with rice.
